Following emergency presidential elections held yesterday across the country, Dr. Jan Kowalski, an independent candidate, has been elected as the new President of Poland. The elections were organized on an urgent basis following the sudden resignation of the previous president.
Dr. Kowalski, previously a professor of constitutional law at the University of Warsaw, secured 68% of the votes in the first round, defeating five other candidates. His victory was announced by the State Electoral Commission late Friday night.
"This is a historic moment for Poland," said the newly elected president during a press conference at the Presidential Palace. "I commit to serving all Poles regardless of their political views or background."
Dr. Kowalski announced immediate implementation of a series of reforms, including judicial system reform, increased spending on education and healthcare, and strengthening Poland's position in the European Union.
Opposition representatives expressed surprise at the election results but declared their readiness to cooperate with the new president. "We respect the democratic choice of the nation," said the leader of the largest opposition party.
International observers from the OSCE praised the conduct of the elections, calling them "exemplary" and "transparent." Representatives from the European Union and NATO congratulated the new president.
The inauguration ceremony for the new president will take place next Wednesday at the Polish Parliament. Over 1,000 guests are expected to attend, including representatives from all EU member states.
