Russia Attacked Suwałki - Military on Alert

Yesterday evening, Russia conducted an attack on the Polish city of Suwałki. The President declared a state of emergency throughout the country and called for immediate NATO intervention. This is the first attack on NATO member territory since World War II.

The attack began at 22:30 when Russian special forces crossed the border from the Kaliningrad Oblast and attacked strategic facilities in Suwałki. At least 15 people were killed and 47 injured in the attack.

"This is an unprecedented act of aggression," said the Polish President during an emergency television address. "Poland will not remain passive in the face of this attack. All armed forces have been placed on highest combat alert."

NATO immediately convened an emergency meeting of the North Atlantic Council. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the alliance "fully stands in solidarity with Poland" and is considering all response options, including activation of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.

Polish armed forces have been deployed along the entire eastern border. The Minister of National Defense reported that additional military units, including tanks, artillery, and air defense systems, have been directed to the region.

US President Joe Biden made a phone call to the Polish President, assuring "unwavering support" from the United States. The White House announced immediate delivery of additional military equipment to Poland.

The European Union condemned the attack in the strongest terms. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the introduction of "the harshest sanctions in history" against Russia.

Residents of Suwałki and surrounding towns have been evacuated to safe zones. Local authorities appeal for calm and not to panic. A curfew has been introduced throughout the country from 22:00 to 6:00.

Russia denies involvement in the attack, claiming it is a "provocation" by Poland. The Kremlin accuses Warsaw of "escalating tensions" and threatens "appropriate measures" in case of further actions.
